Succession Planning: No Cost Member Benefit /news/succession-planning-no-cost-member-benefit/ Wed, 24 May 2023 15:58:35 +0000 /?p=23389 By Justin Mentele, partner at Pinion Global

Members of this Association represent success stories, many of which are also family stories. These stories include innovation, risk, sacrifice, and exhausting effort. They are stories with heart, and that sometimes makes it difficult to write the chapter in which the main character surrenders the lead role.

It can be tough to talk about succession, especially now, when there is little time to talk about anything, said Justin Mentele. The intensity and challenge facing the farm equipment industry may, in fact, serve as a catalyst for many leaders to consider now the right time to step aside and slow down.

When it is time to consider a transition in leadership and ownership, you should first define two terms that can create confusion: estate planning and succession planning.

Estate planning covers the transition of financial wealth or physical assets from one generation to the next. The process typically begins during one’s lifetime, but often does not complete until after death. This hand-off process requires difficult decision-making and thoughtful planning.

Succession planning is based less on physical and more on psychological transitions. At the heart of succession planning is a person, or group of people, who have been in control of the day-to-day and strategic operations of a company. It represents what can be the emotional task of transitioning control to others. The process of co-creating psychological ownership of the vision, strategy, goals, decisions, performance, and results of the company is not easy.

Both types of planning are critically important!

Connections

This is the benefit our active members identify as the most valuable. By attending conventions, they’ve formed professional friendships that have influenced how they operate their business and understand the industry. These are powerful connections.

This is the benefit our active members identify as the most valuable. By attending conventions, they’ve formed professional friendships that have influenced how they operate their business and understand the industry. These are powerful connections.

Beyond the time together, the Association keeps you in touch through a membership directory—print and digital—that helps you find one another by executive name, company name, member type, products, and headquarter location.

Online Resources

In addition to our online directory, there is a host of resources behind a password-protected wall at . You can find archived copies of this newsletter, a database of laws organized by state relating to buyback, warranty, and lemon laws, a farm show calendar, samples of dealer contracts, legislative resources, and a Section 179 tax deduction calculator.

Savings
Members receive discounts on freight and logistics through our partner YRC. You also pay less to register for the annual Supply Summit & Showcase and Marketing & Distribution Convention.

For regular members who do not also belong to the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, the Association provides a free digital copy of the annual ASABE safety standards (a $650 value). Let us know if you would like a USB drive of current standards. Contact Rachel Boehm at Rachel@FarmEquip.org.

Finally, the benefit that can singularly recover your membership dues (and then some) is access to attorneys who specialize in human-resource law and dealer law. Members receive no-cost, confidential, 60-minute consultations with these attorneys for every new legal question.

Peace of Mind

Through a partnership with Sentry Insurance, members have access to a program that offers outstanding depth and expertise in insuring farm equipment manufacturers. Policyholders can tap into resources to assure their products, their property, and their workforce are as safe as possible and well-insured.

Product councils are also available for manufacturers of rotary cutters, towed implements, post hole diggers, and tillage equipment. The groups discuss product safety issues.

Advocacy

Shortline manufacturers’ needs are not the same as multi-national tractor corporations, and neither are your resources. You are affected differently by standards revised to comply with European specifications, for example, or by a push to sell only one color of equipment on dealers’ lots. We are here to be your voice, and we cultivate relationships, monitor legislation, regulation, and standards development to be perpetually prepared to advocate on your behalf.

Information

We stay engaged in industry news to bring you the information that matters the most through this newsletter, the quarterly Ag Innovator magazine, speakers at conventions, our social media channels, and more.

Maximize Membership: Update Directory Listing /featured-small/maximize-membership-update-directory-listing/ Tue, 02 Jun 2020 18:37:58 +0000 /?p=10680 Among services the Association offers members are digital and print tools for staying connected—the membership directory.

The online directory is as current as you make it. When you have staff changes or add products, we update our password-protected web resource as soon as you tell us.

That digital resource, which allows you to search by company, individual, and product, has a companion piece in a book the Association publishes every other year.

That book is in production now. The person at your company defined as the Association’s primary contact recently received (or soon will) an email from Rachel Boehm asking you to update your listing.

The data you provide feeds into our website and ultimately the book.
The Association receives requests for this 200-page plus collection of information that offers contact information by member category, geography, and the categories mentioned above.
