Buhler Industries Acquired by Turkish Company /news/buhler-industries-acquired-by-turkish-company/ Tue, 02 Jan 2024 15:45:51 +0000 /?p=26312 Buhler Industries, the Winnipeg-based company that is the last surviving tractor manufacturer in Canada, has been acquired by a Turkish agricultural equipment company.

Basak Tractors, a division of ASKO Holdings, will pay a total of $60.5 million for 97 per cent of the shares of Buhler Industries that had been held by Combine Factory Rostselmash Ltd., a Russian company that acquired controlling interest in Buhler in 2007.

The deal, which includes covering debts that Buhler owes Rostselmash is to close by the end of the year or early 2024.

Officials from Buhler Industries as well as industry observers believe it鈥檚 a deal that will benefit the on-going future of the enterprise that has been fairly hard hit by the disruptions from post-pandemic supply chain issues.

Buhler employs more than 800 people in plants in Winnipeg, where it makes the Versatile-brand tractors and tillage equipment and in Morden where it makes the Farm King brand grain and hay handling equipment and compacting equipment.

Basak makes tractors up to 120 horse power (compared to Versatile鈥檚 much larger 170-to-620  horsepower machines). About 80 per cent of its sales are in Turkey, but it also exports as far afield as Africa, South America and Japan.

Tractor Supply Buys Orscheln Farm & Home for $320 Million /news/tractor-supply-buys-orscheln-farm-home-for-320-million/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 20:51:22 +0000 /?p=19873  Co. said a federal regulator has approved its purchase of Orscheln Farm & Home, a smaller rival in the rural-lifestyle retail business, after a year and a half of negotiations and lobbying by state attorneys general.

Tractor Supply said Tuesday it will pay $320 million for the 166 stores, the largest acquisition in the company鈥檚 history. It will only keep 81 stores as part of an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission, which includes the sale of 12 locations to Buchheits, a small home-improvement and farm and ranch retailer, and 73 locations to Bomgaars, another small retailer in the category, said Hal Lawton, chief executive of Tractor Supply, in an interview.

Tractor Supply will receive $72 million for the sale of those stores, he said.

The Federal Trade Commission鈥檚 approval comes on the final day the regulatory body could block the purchase under an antitrust review, according to a Tractor Supply spokeswoman. Tractor Supply plans to close the deal Wednesday.

The FTC said Tuesday it approved the deal, including the divestitures, as well as a monitor to oversee compliance with the purchase agreement, among other measures.

Tractor Supply announced the purchase early last year. The company was interested in the deal, in part, because Orscheln鈥檚 mostly Midwestern store base complements Tractor Supply鈥檚 roughly 2,000 store locations, Mr. Lawton said. 鈥淢any of these markets really are a one-store kind of market, and they got there first so we never built,鈥 he said.

Tractor Supply had expected to be required to sell a large number of stores to get the deal approved, Mr. Lawton said. But 鈥渨e did not anticipate it taking this long,鈥 he said.

In May, seven Republican attorneys general signed a letter that asked the FTC to approve the deal and described concern about the process, saying it took too long and didn鈥檛 take into account all the retailers Tractor Supply and Orscheln compete with in rural areas such as big-box stores or feed and grain co-ops.

Tractor Supply鈥檚  throughout the Covid-19 pandemic as people spent more time outside major metropolitan areas fixing up their  or tending to animals.

The company plans to spend between $750,000 and $1 million to rebrand and renovate the Orscheln stores over the next 12 to 15 months, said Mr. Lawton. Orscheln stores鈥 sales per square foot and operating profit are lower than the average Tractor Supply store, leaving room for growth, he said.

Raven Acquires Two Autonomous Ag Technologies /news/raven-acquires-two-autonomous-ag-technologies/ Tue, 12 Nov 2019 22:27:43 +0000 /?p=8590 Raven Industries recently announced the acquisitions of two independent autonomous farm equipment companies after releasing a five-year plan to significantly increase its investment in autonomous technologies.

On Oct. 30, the company announced the acquisition of a majority interest in Dot Technologies, a member company based in Canada that has developed the Dot Power Platform and Dot Ready Implements.

Two days later, Raven announced it acquired Smart Ag, an autonomous systems developer based in Ames, Iowa.

How the acquisitions and further commercialization of autonomous systems will evolve Raven鈥檚 dealer network remains to be seen.

Rob Saik, CEO of Dot Technology, notes that the flexibility of its platform could create some new opportunities with dealers and manufacturers.

鈥淔or shortline implement manufacturers, Dot is an open, U-shaped platform. So we鈥檙e open to talk to shortliners and OEMs about how to integrate their equipment into the Dot platform. So there鈥檚 lots of reasons why people need to take a look at the Dot (system), and we鈥檙e just happy to be able to supply a path to autonomy for the agricultural sector.鈥

Forty-two percent of dealers who responded to the 2019 Precision Farming Dealer Benchmark study cited autonomous equipment as being an important part of growing revenue during the next five years.
